Unknown-1If you’re involved in a transaction where a home has solar panels and/or other energy-efficient features—and an appraisal is going to be done—make sure you request an appraiser who is green qualified. A green-qualified appraiser has the education and knowledge necessary to make sure the proper value is attributed to any energy-efficient features of the home, including owned solar panels, a tight envelope and ductwork, proper insulation, Energy Star appliances, energy-efficient heating and cooling, high-performance windows, and a favorable HERS rating.

Many high-performance homes have been sold without any value having been given to owned solar panels or other energy-efficient features. Be involved in the appraisal process, and make sure to request a green-qualified appraiser in these instances.
